"Modesty" Article

Here is an article clipping I found in my grandmother's Bible entitled "Modesty" --as you read this you will probably end up thinking like I did "WOW! How times have changed---not for the better either." I pray the Lord will help my husband and I to instill in our girls these values.

There are many definitions for modesty. Webster refers to it as "decency" or "decorum." Addison says, "The first of all virtues is innocence; the next is modesty. If we banish modesty out of the world, she carries away with her half the virtue that is in it." Balzae said, "Modesty is the conscience of the body." Diogenes said, "Modesty is the collar of virtue. Modesty is not only an ornament, but also a guard to virtue."

We are living in a time when the moral standard has been brought to a very low level. The price of virtue is "far above rubies". Lady Russell said, 'Live virtously, and you cannot die too soon nor live too long."

The modest girl is careful of her conduct. She acts in a lady like manner in the presence of boys and men. Her very presence is a wholesome uplift to her masculine friends. She has high standards and observes the "handsoff" policy, refusing to court via the "braille system". She does not try to catch her man by chasing him. men are given to the chase, but they do not appreciate being chased.) Rather, she attracts her Prince Charming by her modesty, good manners, spiritual life, and sensible approach, socially, towards life's problems.

The modest girl is careful of her thought life. If this is not pure and clean, the moral purity is endangered. For as one thinketh in his heart, so is he," declared Solomon. She is also careful of the literature she reads, avoiding the trashy, sexy stuff displayed so profusely on our newsstands today. Her language is pure and clean, too, for vulgar, smutty jokes have no place in her speech, nor do suggestive words or phrases.

The modest girl has a gracious influence that flows out like a sweet perfume. Girls, hold on to modesty for dear life, for when she is gone you have suffered an irreparable loss.
